Have a Safe, Happy Thanksgiving

As you prepare the table with a cornucopia of dishes for Thanksgiving this year, keep in mind of these safety tips to prevent any fires or mishaps.

Here are a few tips to make sure you have a fun, safe Thanksgiving:

  1. Check your alarms Make sure both your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are properly operating.

  2. Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dry. Don’t stuff the bird or forget to take out the gizzards. Allow a frozen bird 24 hours of thawing for every 4-5 pounds.

  3. Beware of splashing oil! It can cause a flash fire or serious burns, so lower in the turkey slowly. Be sure to wear fry gloves, too, regular oven mittens might not be insulated enough.

  4. Vent the kitchen. Run any vents or open any windows/doors you have in the kitchen, especially the one over the stove (it’s a common source of carbon monoxide, especially if you’re cooking for several hours). Allow fresh air to circulate at least once an hour.

  5. Always make time for a final inspection of the home and ensure all appliances and gas tanks are turned off with any ashes put in a pail of water. Extinguish any candles and properly discard of any smoking material.
