Motorcyclists - 3 Things you Must Know

As a motorcyclist, it is vitally important to be cautious and aware of your surroundings on the road at all times. Wearing a helmet and other forms of protective gear, maintaining insurance, and riding responsibly are just a few of the precautions motorcyclists should take on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, not all people drive safely. Here are a few things drivers can do to help keep motorcyclists safe:

  1. Maintain 3-4 seconds of following distance instead of the standard 2 seconds. Riders are subject to quick stops because they can suddenly slow down as a result of downshifting.

  2. Do not pull in front of motorcyclists rapidly because it can startle them and cause them to slide and fall while over-braking.

  3. Give motorcyclists the same space you would give to a normal vehicle.

Because not all drivers are attentive and share the road accordingly, there are thousands of accidents that happen every year as a result of another driver’s negligence. In 2015, approximately 5,000 motorcyclists died on the road.
